The Tension Belt of Africa

Writer's picture: Joey Gordy Joey Gordy

After spending over a decade multiplying churches in India and seeing more than one thousand churches start, the Lord called us to Africa. We are uniquely positioned along what has been called “the tension belt of Africa,” where the Muslim North meets the nominally Christian South. We focus our energies in two ways: engaging the unengaged unreached Muslims and equipping disciple-makers

, church planters and missionaries from the “reached” areas to do the same. We are working on establishing training hubs in Africa's fifty most populous cities that will serve as lunchpads for church planting movements among the unreached Muslim population. The first hub established was in Nairobi. It has been amazing to watch God bring believers from over fifteen African countries to Nairobi to receive training in church multiplication. We then get to watch these church planters return home, multiply leaders, and push the movement further. In this way, we have gone from Nairobi to Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, DRC, CAR, Zambia, Botswana, Benin, Burkino Faso, Malawi, South Africa, and Ghana. We believe we are on the brink of a major movement of God among Muslims on this continent! For instance, on the Eastern coast, Muslims have been completely unresponsive to the gospel for over a decade. However, since Covid, our team has seen Muslims come to faith there on a weekly basis, and churches filled with former Muslims are multiplying.
